Dimethyl ether (DME)

  • DME is a modern and safe source of energy when compared with other energy sources in application or under consideration today. DME is also an excellent fuel as LPG replacement.
  • Ultra clean DME fuel provides smokeless combustion with lower CO2 and 90% less NOx emissions than other standard automotive fuels do.
  • DME is biodegradable, non-corrosive, colourless, and does not contaminate soil or aquifers in case of any leakage.
  • DME produced from renewable feedstock is the most efficient fuel when the entire cycle is taken into account. DME can be up to five times more efficient than traditional fuels, resulting in less fuel requirement and better utilization of the resources.
  • In automotive application, DME has the highest efficiency among all other synthetic liquid fuels (i.e., FT liquids, methanol, etc.) and 30% higher fuel economy than gasoline in passenger cars. Due to its clean burn-up, expensive exhaust is not required.
  • DME can be easily transported, stored and used almost everywhere. Therefore, it does not require a fixed network.
  • DME does not deteriorate over time.

Production of DME

  • The advantage of the DME production is that renewable DME can be obtained from bio-synthesis gas derived from biogas/biomass.
  • The synthesis gas produced via reforming technology can be converted to methanol and finally to DME.
  • We in India for converting biogas to DME. Thus, reformer technology can be implemented as the latest technology for renewable fuel production.
  • The developed reformer technology can also be employed with other gases like natural gas, thereby increasing its versatility and wide scale usage.
